Winter Week: Snowman Waffle & Ice Cube Experiment

Goodbye Peace Week

Our last activity - Handprint Doves
Peace Week came to an end, although Little Mama wasn't ready to give up our song, Dance Tunes of Many Lands, that we'd been listening to on our Peace Week rotation.  I completely admit it.  It was a fun song.  We'd both dance whenever it came on.  We'd do our own interpretations of the polka and the Irish jig in our kitchen.  What a fun week full of surprises.  Who knew I'd be doing the jig on a regular basis.

Now it's time for Winter Week and our Winter Wonderland. Let it snow--or, at least, let's pretend!

I didn't go too crazy this time hanging snowflakes all over (see Weather Week).  Just enough to get the idea...

When Little Mama woke up, we followed the snowflake trail.  Snowflakes Little Mama!
Let's go see...

Little Mama was excited at the prospect of a new week.  "It's not Peace Week anymore."  No, you're right.

To get things started, we made a waffles & fruit snowmen.

Multi-grain waffle & Fruit Snowman

This guy came complete with a strawberry hat and scarf, thinly sliced banana arms, blueberry buttons and raisin eyes.  Mmm, delicious.

Let's not forget about the snow!

Sprinkled powdered sugar
Little Mama thought it was hilarious: "where did the head go," as she chomped away.  Hmm, I don't know.  Did you eat it?  Queue the laughter...

Next up, a silly science experiment (if you can call it that)...

Ice cube sensory table - science experiment
Ok, since we are no longer on the east coast and are miles away from any real snow, we had to make do with what we had--ice.  Little Mama loved this simple activity.  I put a few ice cubes in a bowl and let her touch them.  Whoooaa, it's cold Little Mama!  Again, she absolutely loved it.  She was so excited to touch the ice and play with it, putting her hands on and off again.  We talked about how the ice felt and what would happen if we used gloves.

We poured hot water over the ice cubes
Then we poured a small amount of really hot water over the ice cubes and talked about what would happen to the ice.  (This required really close supervision.)  Little Mama, the ice cubes are melting!  Look, they are getting smaller and smaller.

Overall, it was a great hit.  She loved playing with the ice (and eventually the water).   We ended the discussion by putting a bowl of ice outside to see what would happen if we left them outside.  Her quick response, "the squirrels are going to get the ice! Let's see!"  Um, well, maybe ...

Cheers to a new week.  Let's see what this week brings.

  1. I've been so inspired by your postings. I tried to make a cardboard dog with Joshua, but he used it as a step stool and smashed it. Ugh!!!

    1. Omg, Little Mama is totally destruct-o too sometimes! My husband always teases when I make something, "I wonder how long that's going to last." Seriously, that's half the fun to see how she is going to react. At a minimum, the destroyed product always makes for a great conversation. Think Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber when he learned about the dead parakeet, "His head fell off??!" http://youtu.be/MX3lnXPJd_o
